Mental Health Week 2026

Human Crowd Forming A Maple Leaf
Mental Health Week in Canada runs from May 4-10, with this year's theme being "Come Together Canada. Stronger connections, better mental health."

Social connection is a basic human need, one that has a direct impact on all facets of health and well-being. Social connection is something that happens day in and day out. It can be something as small as smiling at passersby or something bigger like spending time with a friend. All moments of connection matter.

Social Isolation and Loneliness

Social Isolation: Limited relationships and/or connections with others
Loneliness: A sense or perception of being isolated or lacking meaningful connection

What Does Loneliness Look and Feel Like?
  • A lack of closeness or emotional connection, even when other people are present
  • Feeling unimportant or as though you don’t matter to those around you
  • Feelings of being stuck, restless, or bored
  • Limited opportunities to engage in activities or experiences that feel meaningful or fulfilling
  • Challenges connecting with or relating to others
Loneliness can affect anyone, but some groups are more vulnerable than others.

Who is Most Vulnerable to Feelings of Loneliness?
  • Youth ages 15-24 (this group reports one of the highest rates of loneliness in Canada)
  • Seniors ages 65+
  • People with disabilities
  • People with limited financial resources
  • People with mental health challenges
  • People with substance use and addiction problems

Connection Is Everyone's Responsibility

"Through small, everyday actions of connection, we can strengthen mental health, reduce loneliness, and build healthier communities" (Canadian Mental Health Association [CMHA], 2026, p.2).

Connection starts with us. This Mental Health Week, take one small step to connect - send a message, make a call, or check in on someone you care about. Join in and help create stronger connections for better mental health.
