Moving overseas is an exciting adventure, but it can also bring challenges, uncertainties, and a steep learning curve. Whether you're newly arrived or have been settling in for a while, adapting to OUTCAN life takes time, patience, and intentional effort.

The good news? There are practical steps you can take to help yourself and your family thrive during your posting.

1. Increase Your Cultural Competence
One of the best ways to feel more comfortable and confident in your new environment is to learn about your host culture. Understanding local customs, traditions, and social norms can reduce misunderstandings and help you feel more connected to your new community.

Try these strategies:

  • Read local guides and welcome materials.
  • Attend your Welcome Brief.
  • Connect with families who have already experienced the OUTCAN transition.
  • Learn the local language, even a few basic phrases.
  • Make an effort to build friendships with local residents.
