During your posting to Yellowknife you will not be assigned to a Family Doctor. Individuals are assigned to an Integrated Health Care Team. Each team consists of Program Assistants, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Community Health Nurses (CHNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Holistic Wellness Advisors (HCWs).

Clinics
Same day clinic appointments are available most days of the week however you must start calling at 8:15am to book an appointment. If an appointment is not available make sure to ask to be placed on the cancellation list.
Although you're likely not to see your family doctor you will see someone within the same doctor group and your information will be added to your chart.
Same Day Services are NOT for issues, such as:
- Complete physical examinations
- Routine pap tests
- Wart treatment and other minor procecdures
- Follow ups for lab and other diagnostic results
- Narcotic medication refills
- Injections
- Completing forms

NWT Health Care offers optometry services through the Stanton Ophthalmology Clinic. The Government of the Northwest Territories covers eyes testing every 2 years.
Stanton Territorial Health Eye Clinic (Gogo Cho Building)
(867) 873-3577The eye clinic hosts the only ophthalmologist in Yellowknife and falls under NWT Health Care. The ophthalmologist is a medical and surgical physician who can diagnose and treat: cataracts, diabetic related complications, glaucoma, age related issues, strabismus and other eye related issues. A host of specialized tests and procedures can also be conducted in the clinic.
Note:
- Walk-in routine eye examinations are available, on a first come first served basis, every Thursday.
- Call as far in advance as possible - appointments can sometimes take a while to secure.

Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services have partnered up with Maple to provide online doctor visits to military dependents. CAF Medical Services
For military members, a Medical Officer (MO), two Medical Technicians, two Nurse Practitioners, and two Civilian Clerk staff CAF HS Det Yellowknife. The MIR is a detachment of 1 Field Ambulance in Edmonton, which provides additional administrative and clinical support.
Sick parade hours are from 0800-0930hrs Monday to Friday. Following sick parade the staff are providing care to their scheduled patients.
Unlike typical Health Service Centre across the CAF; we do not have services such as lab, diagnostic imaging, physiotherapy, and mental health at the detachment. These services are available through external providers such as Stanton Territorial Hospital. There are a number of specialists available at STH such as, obstetrician/gynecologists, general surgeons, radiologists, internists, pediatricians, ophthalmologist, along with all the supporting personnel required to staff the 136 bed territorial hospital, and an ICU.
All prescription medications are sent to local pharmacies for dispensing. Any prescriptions that are filled by a CAF Pharmacy, can have remaining refills transferred to one of the local pharmacies. When picking up a prescription be sure to present your Blue Cross card. There are a number of pharmacies in the city, including Sutherland’s, Walmart, Co-op, Independent and Shopper’s Drug Mart.
Optical supplies and services are available with two optical companies offering reasonably prompt and efficient service.
The MIR is not responsible for dental care. Any dental concerns are addressed by 1 Dental Unit Edmonton. They can be contacted at 780-973-4011 x 4466.
The MIR does not provide dependent medical care. Families can contact Frame Lake Community Health Clinic or Yellowknife Primary Care Clinic to schedule medical appointments even if they do not have a primary care provider (Family Doctor or Nurse Practitioner). Families can also contact either clinic to be added to a waitlist for a primary care provider.
