Are there veterinarians in Yellowknife?
Yes, however there is currently only one veterinarian in town.

Is pet care difficult to secure?
With only one veterinarian in town, there may be times when the clinic is not taking on new clients.

Are all pet medical services offered in Yellowknife?
No, some testing and procedures must be performed down south.

Are there after hours emergency pet care?
After hours veterinary emergency care is triaged and very limited.

What do I do if my pet has an emergency health issue?
There is a triage service available to assess emergency issues and determine options pet parents should take. Triage is offered through VetTriage and can be accessed at www.VetTriage.com/auroravh for a cost of $50 USD.

It is not unheard of for pet parents to be given direction to drive south for emergency pet care or to wait until the pet clinic opens during their regular hours.

Is veterinary care expensive?
Yes, pet care in general is very expensive. This is not only true for veterinary care but also for boarding and some grooming services.

Are there limitations in specific pet supplies?
It depends on the brands you are used to using. You may want to reach out to local pet supply stores to check if they stock the brand you are used to.
Purchasing specialized pet food via Amazon or other suppliers is an option that may be more cost effective. -
Is it difficult to secure pet care while I’m away?
At times, it may be difficult to book a pet sitter or a kennel for your pet. Plan months ahead of time and have a backup plan in case your first plan falls through.

There is a dog park behind the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool.

Can I walk my dog off leash?
Yes, there are several off-leash areas in town.

Should I be concerned about wildlife?
Yes, you should always be vigilant with your pets. It is very common to see fox in town. Bears occasionally make an appearance as well.
It is advisable to keep a close eye on cats and other small pets. -
Should I be concerned about Yellowknife flora (a.k.a. outside grasses and plants)?
Yes, Yellowknife grass is different from down south, and some species are harmful to pets – such as foxtail grass, grass awns and others. You can seek additional information from your vet.
