Every year, 160 million people worldwide contemplate suicide, and tragically, 800,000 of them die by suicide. Every year in Quebec, there are around 1,100 suicides, or 3 deaths a day. For each of these deaths, 6 to 10 people are bereaved and many others are shaken. Suicide attempts and psychological distress add to the problem. Although suicide is an individual act, it takes place in a context of interactions between the individual, his or her immediate community and society in general. We are all concerned by the problem, and we need to take preventive action on many levels. There should be no reason to choose suicide, and if we all do our part, we can prevent deaths and their devastating impacts (Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention and Association québécoise de prévention du suicide).
The power of coming together and reaching out is immense, it's a way of saving lives. With this goal in mind, the PSP Health Promotion Department invites you to take part in a solidarity walk to generate hope in our community and reduce the burden of psychological distress and suicide.
Will you be joining us on September 10?
